(I) “Respect is earned, not demanded." You may demand respect from your students, and might even get it grudgingly but superficially by being an extremely stern teacher, but you will never win their hearts and minds that way. Don't think just because they are young and inexperience you can pull the wool over their eyes. Students are much more perceptive than you think. They can usually size you up within the first 10 minutes they first meet you. 1.

(II) You can be as strict as you want provided you are fair. "Strict but fair" is something students can appreciate. Although most students want an ''easy" teacher, but deep down in their hearts they know that's not good for them. However, if you are overly hard, just for the sake of being regarded as a "hard teacher", a dubious honour many teachers enjoy, then you may be fear but despised.

(III) It is NOT a shame to say " I do not know." This may be a problem in countries like China, Japan, Korea and places like HK and Taiwan where "face" is the all-important factor. Don't ever try to "talk" your way out of something you have no answer for. Students are NOT dumb, they see through your charade right away. Tell them honestly " I do not have the answer right away but I will look it up and get back to you as soon as possible." Make sure you keep your word. Get back to them the next day, if possible. They will appreciate it and will respect you for being up front with them.

(IV) Never set exam question to proof how smart you are. The purpose of a test is to find out what students know and not to show them how clever you are in setting convoluted questions. I once had a professor who was so conceited that he practically answered all the questions he himself threw at me during a Ph.D. oral exam. He was too keen in showing off how much he knew about the subject.
(V) When an exam is too difficult, it wipes out the good as well as the bad. The purpose of mass education, like it or not, is not to promote only the geniuses but to give the average student a solid basis from which to grow.

(vi) Encourage discourse and
